Parish Holidays - St. Enoder - near Truro, Cornwall - Parish Holidays

(Tuesday 14th June to Wednesday 22nd June)

The ancient parish of St. Enoder encompasses the villages of Summercourt, Fraddon and Indian Queens in the very heart of Cornwall.

The parish church dates from the 6th Century A.D. and was once on the main coach route through Cornwall. Over the ages new, straighter roads have by-passed the church which now stands alone in the midst of rolling countryside. The village of Indian Queens takes its name from the legendary journey of the Red Indian Princess Pocahontas, who travelled from North America to be presented at the court of Queen Elizabeth I by Captain John Smith whose life she had twice saved. It is believed that she stayed there overnight at a roadside inn. In the midst of the village is the tiny Victorian chapel dedicated to St. Francis.

From our parish it is possible to reach all the sights and sounds of Cornwall in a very short time and our itinerary has been arranged to show you some of the best of our lovely county. In the West are the wild moorlands of Penwith with its Atlantic swept bays and the surreal beauty of St. Michael’s Mount. We plan to visit the cliff-top Minack Theatre; Truro’s three-spired Cathedral; the historic port of Charlestown with its stately square-riggers and the beautiful Carrick Roads estuary of the river Fal with its impressive castles of Henry VIII; and General Eisenhower’s D-Day embarkation points. We will also take you to the Eden Project and to Tintagel, the legendary and dramatic site of King Arthur’s Camelot.

We so look forward to welcoming you into our homes and to this lovely County of Cornwall.

Outline Itinerary

Tuesday - Arrive in the Parish, welcomed and escorted to your hosts’ homes. Settle in and enjoy dinner with your hosts.

Wednesday - Meet fellow guests for coffee at St. Enoder Church and visit local sites of interest. Continue along the north coast of Cornwall for a pub lunch. Afterwards, visit King Arthur’s Castle at Tintagel. Return via Trethevey. Parish Welcome Buffet Party for all guests and hosts.

Thursday - A more flexible day with a choice of three programmes. Firstly, a leisurely start by travelling to the small and historic port of Charlestown to view the “Square Riggers” if they are there, followed by lunch at the Bosun’s Locker. Then either a visit to the intriguing Shipwreck Museum or the Eden Project near St. Austell. The third option would be an earlier start, visiting the Shipwreck Museum in the morning and the Eden Project in the afternoon (decisions can be made when we first meet up). Dinner with a Parish family.

Friday - Visit Marazion and the magnificent St. Michael’s Mount. This spectacular castle on its rocky island dates from 14th Century. Approached by a causeway at low tide, the castle presents fine views towards Land’s End and The Lizard peninsulas. The castle is the home of Lord St. Levan and houses fascinating early rooms and an outstanding armoury. After a snack lunch drive to Gunwallow Church Cove, returning home via Carn Brea (weather permitting). Customary “Fish and Chip” supper at a local restaurant.

Saturday - A day out around south Cornwall’s beautiful deep-water Carrick Roads and estuary of the river Fal.

Drive to Falmouth and take a ferry up the estuary to the Smugglers Cottage at Tolverne for lunch. Situated at the head of the Carrick Roads, Tolverne was a principal embarkation point for the D-Day Normandy landings on 6 June 1944. General Dwight D Eisenhower reviewed troops here. After lunch drive to St. Just in Roseland, then on to St. Mawes with an optional visit to Henry VIII’s Castle. Dinner with a Parish family.

Sunday - Morning Service at St. Enoder followed by a traditional Sunday roast lunch and an afternoon relaxing with your hosts. In the evening, a concert in St. Enoder Church by a male voice choir. Such choirs are long established forms of Celtic entertainment and this event, like many others in the programme seeks to present a true flavour of Cornwall.

Monday - Leave for St. Ives. Drive to the moorlands of Penwith going through Zennor to Madron Well and St Levan Church. Opportunity to walk the coastal path and experience the wild beauty of this breath-taking part of Cornwall’s Atlantic coast. Cornish cream tea, then on to the renowned open-air Minack Theatre for an evening performance set against the dramatic backdrop of the English Channel. A picnic supper will be provided.

Tuesday - A visit to Truro, Cornwall’s only city and a guided tour of the delightful 19th Century three-spired cathedral. Lunch followed by free time, perhaps to shop or for individual visits. In the evening a Parish Supper Party for all guests, hosts and parishioners.

Wednesday - Sadly, we must say goodbye - but hope that 22nd June you’ll leave with fond memories and a desire to visit us again.
